Canada reported 0.8% quarter-on-quarter real GDP growth on 28 August while the U.S. 2-year yield rose 10 bp over the week. These are relevant growth and rate-differential facts, not a single-cause attribution for the currency move.
The Bank of Korea raised its Base Rate by 25 bp to 3.00% on 27 August and cited improved FX supply-demand conditions and a weaker U.S. dollar in its discussion of the won.
Japan's July national CPI and August Tokyo CPI releases kept inflation and Bank of Japan expectations in focus around the comparison period; the yen nevertheless weakened over the Friday-to-Friday window.
Pair convention and cut-off
EUR, GBP and AUD are shown as U.S. dollars per currency unit; JPY, CNY, CAD, INR, BRL, MXN, KRW, IDR, TRY and ZAR are shown as local currency units per U.S. dollar. Weekly change always describes the named non-USD currency's performance against USD, so a lower USD/local quote is positive for that currency.

Phoenix Macro Watch
Only releases published by the selected Friday cut-off are included.
The July core PCE price index rose 0.2% month on month and 3.3% year on year, a globally relevant input to policy and real-rate expectations.
U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis sourceThe Bank of Korea raised the Base Rate by 25 bp, citing stronger growth, persistent inflation pressure and financial-stability risks.
Bank of Korea sourceCanada reported second-quarter real GDP growth of 0.8%, adding a dated growth signal to the Canadian-dollar context.
Statistics Canada sourceThe account records the ECB's inflation-risk assessment, policy discussion and data-dependent market context.
European Central Bank sourceInterpretation of the Week's Data
Phoenix commentary is visually separated from sourced market and macro facts.
What matters
Asia-Pacific and emerging-market equities outpaced Europe, while the U.S. 2-year yield rose and the 10-year yield edged lower.
Editorial synthesis
The week was cross-asset and regionally divergent: moderate global equity gains coexisted with a flatter U.S. curve, softer gold and a sharp Brent decline.
Indicators to monitor
U.S. inflation and labour releases, regional equity leadership, G20 policy divergence and whether lower oil prices persist are the next watchpoints.

Developments Behind The Readings
Source-backed developments and their practical relevance.
Development 1
Asia led a modest global equity advance
The STOXX Global 1800 USD gross-return index rose 0.3% from 21 to 28 August; Asia-Pacific gained 0.9% and emerging markets gained 0.7%, while Europe fell 0.3%.
The 1.2 percentage-point gap between Asia-Pacific and Europe was the clearest regional divergence in the proposed benchmark set.
Use the global benchmark for direction and the regional benchmarks to identify where that direction was not shared.
Development 2
The U.S. curve flattened as the front end repriced
U.S. Treasury observations show the 2-year yield rising 10 bp to 4.34% while the 10-year yield slipped 1 bp to 4.73% from 21 to 28 August.
The front-end rise followed a week in which U.S. core PCE inflation was reported at 3.3% year on year.
Keep near-term policy expectations separate from the longer-term financing signal when interpreting the curve.
Development 3
G20 currencies reflected policy and growth divergence
Within the ECB-derived G20 panel, the Canadian dollar fell 0.8%, the Korean won rose 0.7% and the Japanese yen fell 0.6% against the U.S. dollar over the week.
The Bank of Korea raised its Base Rate by 25 bp, while Canada released 0.8% quarter-on-quarter real GDP growth on 28 August; driver notes are contextual rather than single-cause claims.
Compare currency moves on one base convention and tie any explanation to dated policy or growth evidence.
Development 4
Gold, silver and oil sent distinct commodity signals
COMEX December gold fell 3.2% from $4,624.10 to $4,478.10 per ounce, COMEX December silver fell 3.6% from $69.466 to $66.995 per ounce, and EIA Brent fell 7.4% from $96.92 to $89.75 per barrel.
Gold and silver provide distinct precious-metals signals; Brent remains one inflation and input-cost signal rather than the edition's dominant theme.
Read commodity moves alongside rates and currencies instead of treating one market as the entire weekly narrative.
Phoenix Scenario Lens
Possible operating contexts, not predictions or recommendations.
Base context
The sourced readings describe moderate global equity gains with meaningful regional divergence and a flatter U.S. curve; they do not establish a single market direction for the next period.
Upside context
Broader participation could improve if Europe catches up with Asia-Pacific and front-end rate pressure eases.
Risk context
Persistent short-end yield pressure or renewed divergence across currencies and regions could tighten financing and planning assumptions.
Phoenix Client Lens
Interpretive planning prompts derived from the sourced weekly observations.
Review financing, currency and input-cost sensitivities against the verified cross-asset pack rather than one headline market.
Separate regional equity performance from private financing assumptions and test plans against both ends of the U.S. curve.
Distinguish company fundamentals from regional benchmark direction, currency translation and the rate backdrop.
Monitor G20 policy divergence and Asian equity leadership with each conclusion tied to dated source evidence.
